TIGHTROPE © STIFLE STABILZATION

Tightrope© is a new variation of the standard lateral suture technique (LST) developed by Arthrex Vet. The goals of Tightrope © stabilization are similar to LST. However, there are several noteworthy exceptions. Tightrope© uses Fibertape© instead of monofilament (Nylon). Fibertape © has been demonstrated to be three times stronger than Nylon with 50% less loosening. Fibertape© is placed through bone tunnels and secured to the bone surface rather than passing over soft tissues and under the femorofabellar ligament. The extra strength of the Fibertape© and bone tunnel anchor points make the Tightrope© a feasible procedure for large and giant breed dogs that may not be good candidates for LST. A recent comparison of Tightrope© stabilization to TPLO found no significant differences in outcome. The average weight of dogs in this study was 85 pounds with the heaviest dog weighing around 115 pounds. The postoperative instructions and care are similar to those for LST. Patients should be restricted from jumping, running, and rough play for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks they can be gradually returned to normal activity.
