| Total Ear Canal Ablation
TOTAL EAR CANAL ABLATION Your pet has been diagnosed with an ear condition that will not get better with medical treatment. These conditions are generally painful and can be dangerous to your pet's health. An ear canal ablation with bulla osteotomy has been recommended to hopefully cure the ear disease. This surgery involves complete removal of the ear canals and opening of the middle ear to cure the problem and to prevent reinfection. Your pet will not have an opening in the skin after surgery. Fortunately, 97% of patients having this surgery have successful long-term resolution of ear disease. Hearing is generally slightly diminished due to removal of the ear canal. However, adequate hearing is usually preserved if the organs of hearing in the middle ear can be left in place. Deafness is possible after surgery but fortunately is uncommon. Other complications can be associated with this surgery. Temporary of permanent damage to the facial nerve can take place. Signs include a drooping lip and inability to blink. Fortunately, causes patient discomfort. A tilting of the head to one side after surgery is possible. This complication is especially rare unless the middle ear is severely diseased. Head tilt can be temporary or permanent. Antibiotics are given for 7-10 days after surgery. Sutures are removed in 10-14 days at which time most patients are back to normal health. Care must be taken to observe the incision until the sutures are removed. We recommend that the ears be cleaned if needed and Neosporin ointment placed on the incision daily. Do not let your pet scratch the ears or rub them on the ground. An Elizabethan collar will be needed to prevent self-trauma if this occurs. |
