OCD Release Instructions

OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS (OCD)

Osteochondritis dissecans is a flap of cartilage, which has detached from the supporting bone and is loose in the joint.  This can occur in the shoulder, elbow, stifle, and hock of immature, large dogs, and in many cases is found in the same joint of the opposite limb.  Surgical removal of the flap from the shoulder usually results in improved limb function.  Surgical removal of the flap from the elbow, stifle and hock may be helpful if the dog is treated before extensive degenerative joint disease (arthritis) develops.  In some cases, surgery will help a dog that is lame and already has arthritis.  However, surgical treatment may not appear to alter the progression of arthritis in some cases and medical therapy may be necessary after surgery for osteochondritis dissecans of the hock, knee and elbow.

It generally takes about eight weeks for the joint to heal. Your pet may not use the operated leg for the first two weeks.  It is okay for your pet to start using the leg as soon as they want.  Your pet's activity should be restricted for the first 2 weeks.  We recommend no hard running or jumping.

We expect your pet to have slow gradual improvement of use of the leg.  Please call if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's progress.
