Cervical Disc Release Instructions

Your pet has been diagnosed as having a cervical disc herniation.  The herniated disc presses on the spinal cord.  This pressure interferes with normal nerve impulse transmission to and from the brain and can cause severe pain if enough pressure is placed on the cord or nerve roots.  The symptoms your pet was showing before surgery were a result of this pressure.   To decompress the spinal cord we have made a window in the bone surrounding the spinal cord.  Through this window we have removed the herniated disc material.
The damage to the spinal cord, which happened at the time of herniation, will take time to heal.  During surgery we may have irritated the spinal cord by removing the disc material.  Both of these factors mean that the clinical symptoms your pet had before surgery may be worse temporarily after surgery.  Rest and time will most likely resolve these problems.
Every case is different depending on the severity of the initial damage but we can generalize in predicting the expected progress of your pet.  Within 7-10 days after surgery your pet should be much less painful.  We recommend strict activity restriction for two weeks after surgery no matter how good your pet may feel.  Confinement to one small room of the house with no furniture to jump on and off or a kennel crate is best. Do not allow your pet to run, jump or climb a flight of stairs.   Dogs need to be supervised outside or in a body harness.  Do not use a neck leash.
If your pet has discomfort that the pain medications we send home are not adequate  to alleviate call us.
We recommend rechecking your pet two weeks after surgery to evaluate their neurolocical  progress and make recommendation for your pet returning to normal activity.
