Bandage/Cast/Splint Care

POSTOPERATIVE CARE FOR BANDAGES/SPLINTS/CASTS

The purpose of the bandage is to protect the soft tissues during the early postoperative phase.  The time the bandage will be maintained depends on the patient's medical problem and the purpose of the bandage.  We may give you specific instructions at the time of your pet's release, but the following are general instructions that should be closely followed.

Your pet must be confined to a small area while the bandage, splint or cast is in place.  Too much activity causes the bandage to irritate the skin.  Your pet should not play with other animals.  Dogs can be walked on a leash or outside to urinate and defecate.  It is very important to keep the bandage clean and dry.  A plastic bag can be placed over the bandage before the dog goes outside, but be sure to remove it afterwards.
Please check the bandage DAILY for sores along the edges.  If the bandage gets wet, if your pet chews at the cast, or there is a foul odor please call our office to schedule a bandage change as soon as possible.  If your pet was using the leg and then stops, this may also be an indication that there is a problem
Call our office or the Emergency Clinic IMMEDIATELY if the toes swell to have the bandage removed as soon as possible.  Swollen toes indicate the circulation to the foot is seriously impaired.  As soon as the swelling resolves the bandage, cast or splint can be replaced.  The better your pet's activity restriction, the less likely you are to have problems with the bandage.
The bandage, cast or splint should be checked once a week to make sure it is performing properly.
