THORACOLUMBAR DISC SURGERY

Your dog has had a hemilaminectomy/ laminectomy (removing the bone over the compressed cord and removing herniated disc material.  Your dog has been observed to determine if the clinical signs (paralysis, loss of pain sensation, bladder control) are improving.  When the condition has stabilized your pet will be ready to return home.

HOME CARE

Whether your dog is completely paralyzed or just uncoordinated they will usually still try to do all the same things they normally do.  We recommend your dog stay in one small room of the house, a playpen or crate for a minimum of the first 2 weeks after surgery.  It is okay for your pet to scoot around a little as long as they are not making themselves sore or causing skin abrasions.  It is okay for your pet to be on your lap as long as you do not allow them to jump off until you are sure they have regained enough neurological function to be able to catch themselves without injury.

If your dog cannot urinate without assistance, you will be shown how to express or catheterize the bladder.  The ability to urinate on their own is one of the first functions to return.  Take your dog outside and give them the opportunity to urinate on their own.Your dog does not need to stand to be able to urinate.  You will know your dog is able to urinate on their own when you see them urinate a nice stream of urine.  If they are leaving wet spots or dripping when you pick them up this is usually overflow and not conscious urination.  If your pet gets any urine or fecal material on them you can bath and towel dry them, just don't soak the incision under water.

You may not see complete improvement in your pet's neurological condition during the first 2 weeks.  It takes about 2 weeks for inflammation to resolve and the spinal cord to start replacing the coverings that carry the signals from the brain to the back legs.  Some dogs may improve sooner.  Most dogs are able to urinate and possibly stand or take a few steps after 2 weeks.  Most improvement is seen two weeks to two months after surgery, but dogs can improve for as long as six months.

Please call our office for a recheck 2 weeks after surgery.  Our surgeons like to reevaluate your pet's neurogical status and recommend physical therapy at that time if necessary.
