Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair

ACL

Your pet has sustained an injury to one of the ligaments in the knee.  The result of this type of injury is an unstable knee joint.  The instability, the torn ligament and other cartilage damage are the reasons for the lameness which you have observed and will result in degenerative arthritis if surgical treatment is not chosen.
Surgery was performed to give your pet the best chance for recovery.  Multiple procedures were performed to remove the damaged tissue from the joint and to stabilize the knee.
During the next eight weeks you must enforce rest so the knee is not stressed excessively.  The dog should be on a leash for urination and defecation.  Your pet may not use the operated leg for the first 2 weeks.  It is fine for them to start touching the leg down as soon as they want as long as they are not running, jumping or climbing  flights of stairs.  We recommend your pet stay in one room of the house with no furniture to jump on, or a kennel crate if that is better for your situation.  Swimming, passive flexion, slow leash walks or other physical therapy may be recommended if your pet is not already starting to use the operated leg at 2 weeks.  Please call our office for recommendations before beginning any exercise during the first 8 weeks after surgery.
Most patients begin touching the foot to the ground at 10-14 days with slow but continual improvement in use of the leg.  Usually the limb is used consistently at eight weeks after surgery.  However, full recovery may take more time.  Please call if you think your pet is not progressing.  Occasionally a minor surgical procedure or some form of medication may be required to restore limb function.
